Why "Sunfish" ?

Hi everyone!

I am beyond excited to finally have a website up! It has been such a fun process choosing photos and fonts, and creating a place that best represents myself and Sunfish. This is my first blog post, and I'm pretty stoked about having a place to put down my thoughts having to do with and not having to do with jewelry and my journey.

Thanks for being here.

I remember it being early September, one of the warmest times of the year in Humboldt- but also when the idea of sharks begin creeping back into every surfers' mind, as "sharktober" is just around the corner. While far out to sea about a half hour into my session, I saw a large fin pop out of the water. It began bobbing up and down, and disappearing under the surface for moments on end, only to resurface in a new location. It was a pretty sizable fin, and I was pretty far out. The two other surfers out had both just caught waves in and were just beginning to make the long paddle back out. I began paddling in, quickly... but it only seemed to be following me. Once I reached the shore, I looked behind me- and there it was.

A beautiful sunfish!

A creature that I had never seen before, barely had heard of, and never could have imagined it's size and odd shape. I ditched my board, and sat near it in the water momentarily, before it slowly made it's way back to sea.

After doing some research once I got home, I found that their scientific name is Mola Mola, and that they usually reside in tropical waters- unfortunately meaning that this particular sunfish was probably sick and lost (I did read somewhere that they sometimes wander so hopefully that wasn't the case). I also found that they are the heaviest of all the bony fish, weighing up to 5,000 pounds and growing to be up to 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide!! They love jellyfish, and are curious animals which explains why it followed me to shore to check out what I was. They are harmless though which isn't surprising- with their extremely cute face and small, round mouths that they cannot fully close. They are named sunfish not only for their round body structure, but also because they love surfacing and basking in the sun. They are also as rare as seeing a shark (I did see one a few months ago- but that's a different story), so I feel pretty lucky that I was able to spend some time with one.

That day has stayed with me ever since, and was such a special moment in time for me. When I began creating jewelry and this business, and entering the phase when it was time to name my shop- I was going back and forth from names that never quite felt right. When "Sunfish Jewelry" came to me, I knew it was perfect.

Handmade treasures made for "sunfish" everywhere- humans that love the sun on their skin and how the ocean provides them with such confidence, magic, and bliss that the feeling is almost too hard to describe.

I also love working with hoops and circles- representing the circular and unique body of a sunfish.

My goal for Sunfish is to create versatile jewelry that can be worn dressed up or down, fitting in with the lifestyles of adventurous and outdoorsy folks. I tend to go from work, to the beach, to hanging out with friends, and sometimes going out to dinner or dressing up for a night out. I usually stick with the same jewelry, and wear mostly the same pieces on every occasion for weeks on end- so simple jewelry that goes with almost anything has always caught my eye.

I also want everyone who wears Sunfish Jewelry to instantly feel a sense of "confidence, magic, and bliss", much like how the ocean makes me feel. Jewelry can change an outfit in a second, and even if I'm in jeans and sweatshirt, adding some jewelry always makes me feel ready for the day ahead.

I am brought back to that special day with my sunfish friend often, with each piece that is thought up, created, and sold a reflection. My visions coming to life with lingering inspiration.
